After a day long skate trip, I figured Sandler would be tired. I was looking forward to the luxury of an early turn-in and a quiet evening to myself. My fantasy was over as soon as I pulled up to retrieve him from the skatepark. I was greeted with a quick hello followed by the question, “Can I skate for five ‘mo’ minutes?”
Read MoreWe all know kids say the darnedest things. In fact, there have been many television shows that are based on that subject alone. Life with Sandler is like living a combination of one of those episodes paired with “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” (only in our case, getting chocolate milk). I often wonder what could possibly be going on in his mind to generate some of the questions he asks.
Read MoreRaising my kids has been a constant reminder of the silly interests I had growing up. My stupid, and often dangerous, inventions paired with my innocent imagination kept the life intriguing and adventurous. I feel fortunate that Sandler rarely gravitates toward video games or television. He would much rather be outside on his skateboard. Sometimes he likes to take it one step further by being a skateboarding character with special powers that propel him to execute extra difficult tricks.
Read MoreLiving life to the fullest is something Sandler has unintentionally taught me to do every single day. I could not be more grateful for him enlightening me on how important it is to never give up and enjoy every ounce of the journey. When he arrived into the world with all of his complications, a bright light turned on and signaled that life is far too precious to take for granted. He opened my mind to how beautiful the most simple things in life are and to never miss a chance to enjoy every moment.
Read MoreIf someone would have told me that a kid’s sixth grade graduation or Go Skateboarding Day would both be meaningful events in my life, I would have thought that someone was absolutely crazy. Then there was life with Sandler. Both of those occasions happened to fall on the same day. Not only was it one of the greatest days ever, but it was also one of the most memorable twenty-four hours we have ever experienced. In fact, it was so unforgettable that Sandler ended the day with, “Mommy… I’m going to put today in my ‘memowy’ forever!”
Read MoreWhen he was learning to talk, he thought his name was Adam Sandler. For a couple years, that is how he identified himself. He would inevitably approach whoever was in his path, force a friendly handshake, and command an exchange of titles. It was always entertaining to watch people who understood him react because he would not only say it with such conviction, but he appeared to be channeling the famous movie star himself. Upon most faces, a big smile would appear followed by a quick look around to see if they were being punk’d. Sometimes I would explain the name situation, but usually I would just enjoy the looks and laugh to myself thinking how strange the whole interaction was for the person on the receiving end.
Read MoreSandler’s first day home from the hospital was merely a pit stop to gather necessities in preparation to return and manage his jaundice. I ran upstairs to throw some essentials together. I left him and his tiny body hooked up to his oxygen—under the watch of his four year old sister [Bootsie]—thinking they would be fine. It was only going to take me a minute to return with some fresh clothes. As I bolted down the stairs to get everyone back into the car, I was stopped by my peripherals. Bootsie was holding Sandler completely upside down—oxygen tubes and all—telling him what a handsome brother he was. In order not to scare her, I slowly walked over to flip him upright. I agreed he was handsome, but he looks even better when he is not hanging by his ankles. It was that moment I realized Sandler had no chance of being a delicate flower.
Read MoreI was sitting across the table at dinner with Sandler the other evening and I was flooded with flashbacks from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. For those of us old enough to remember the movie, images of Spicoli typically come to mind—his unforgettable face and hair accompanied by the priceless quotes. Lines delivered in such a way that cannot be mistaken for any other character from any other movie. However, I could not quite put my finger on what the connection was between Sandler and a movie that had come out in 1982 (other than the fact that they carry skateboards around).
Read MoreA few weeks ago, Sandler had the pleasure of meeting skateboarding legend, Tony Hawk, at the grand opening of Guac Amigos in Newport Beach, CA. Not only did they meet, but if you remember, Sandler generously gifted the “Bird Man” a pair of Whoopee cushions. Shortly after the interaction, Sandler had approached him and asked if he could have his skateboard when he was done showcasing his world class talents in the demo. Much to our surprise, Tony obliged on one condition: He said, “You can have my board, but I have to fly out of town tomorrow and skate it in another demo. I can get this board to you after that trip.” We were all shocked by Tony’s response. Granted, I figured Tony would meet hundreds of more fans in that time frame, and most likely forget his conversation with Sandler—let alone shipping him one of his random, used skateboards. Let me just say we found out that Mr. Hawk is man of his word; the story is nothing short of a miracle.
Read MoreJust over a year ago, Sandler asked me to help him Google “Chucky.” Of course I only know one Chucky, but thought he could not possibly be referring to the creepy doll from the late 80’s; I knew he had never seen the movies nor had any exposure to such. Yet, that is who he was talking about and he insisted we find every image we could—and that we did. He was sold. Hook, line, and sinker. New obsession: Chucky The Doll.
