One of the Guys
I am the first to admit that before I had kids, I imagined when I did, they would be rich and famous, professional athletes, innovators who cure disease and famine, or professors who teach the world to be a better place. Then I had them, and realized those thoughts were just pipe dreams. What I actually wanted, is for them to be healthy and happy.
Don’t get me wrong, most days I think my children are extraordinary—they certainly are unique (beyond being the only two people in the world with their diagnosis)—but gone are the days of fantasizing about them becoming president or world leaders. Though I do believe Sandler has a shot at being the mayor one day (with his personality and people skills). I really only care about his well-being and having a group of friends who accept him for who he is and support his prosperity. So when he got invited to hang out with his Curb Cowboy teammates over the holiday weekend, he and I were beyond thrilled.
I act as his liaison, or personal assistant, and book his calendar as well as chauffeur him to events. After several days of rain, feasting and together, time I could not escort him to his buddies house fast enough. In fact, I was so elated about the invitation I made sure he arrived with beverages and candy in hand as a bribe for an extended stay. They took the bait—hook, line and sinker. Sandler got to stay for a few hours.
The guys did not let Sandler down. The evening turned out to be the hang out of his dreams. They screen printed shirts, played video games, ate some grilled cheese sandwiches, went to the ice cream shop, and talked about guy stuff and skateboarding. None of which may sound all that magical, but for a kid who values people and friendship the way Sandler does, nothing could have meant more than an evening of such brotherhood.
Yes, he is about twelve years younger (and a foot and a half shorter) than his fellow teammates, but just like skateboarding, those things do not quantify or qualify you as part of the crew. All that matters is that you are healthy, happy and having fun. Oh… and that your mom is getting a minute of alone time and sanity.
