Snack Critic

The other day, after another awesome session of skating, Sandler and his buddies gathered in the parking lot to say their goodbyes. One of his best pals was explaining he had to hurry to get to work. He happens to work at Sandler’s favorite place—second to the skatepark—Trader Joe’s. We let him know we would probably see him there; we frequent the store several times a week not only for groceries, but also so Sandler can see some of his favorite people… the TJ employees.

As they exchanged handshakes and Sandler took his pads and helmet off, I could tell he was deep in thought. I was in for yet another interesting conversation once we were in the car. He buckled his seat belt—followed by a “brilliant idea” expression—and said, “Mommy… I’m going to ask Santa for a job at Trader Joe’s for Christmas!” I questioned if I had heard him correctly since he was not asking for a fancy video game system or an expensive electronic toy, nor a new skateboard—but, a job. What kid asks Saint Nick for employment?

At first I wondered if he had just figured out how to completely manipulate me and Santa Clause to get him whatever he wanted for Christmas by asking for something so endearing and altruistic. However, as we continued to discuss his wish, I could tell that he was not only serious but felt very passionate about how much he would enjoy working there. He said having a job would give him the opportunity to help me pay bills. Just like The Grinch, my heart grew three sizes bigger.

Due to child labor laws and safety regulations, I knew he could not officially apply or be hired for a few years. I decided to get creative and reward him with the perfect position—Trader Joe’s First Official Snack Critic.

I  printed out several documents that read, “Welcome to the team Sandler!  We are excited for you to be our first official SNACK CRITIC. Your job is very important to us and our customers. Every time you try one of our snacks please give it a thumbs up (1 being the worst, 5 being the best). Glad to have you on board.”

I included some thumbs up icons for him to color in and impressed myself with the look of authenticity.

The next day we went to Trader Joe’s, per usual, but this time he was even more excited than normal because I told him he could see if they were hiring. I hid the worksheets in an official looking envelope and sneakily handed them off to the manager. Knowing Sandler and his request, the manager played along by welcoming Sandler to the team. He shook his hand and asked that Sandler turn his work into the office upon completion. The look on Sandler’s face was that of a kid who had just received a Christmas miracle. Though he did not doubt for a second that he would get a job there, his position as a Snack Critic far exceeded his expectations and wishes.

So far he has critiqued four snacks and the only problem he has run into is that they rate seven to nine thumbs up, not just five.
