Bonnie & Clyde
Like many, I panicked at the rumor of schools shutting down and quarantine becoming a reality. Not so much because I fear isolation with my kids, but because I cannot imagine how Sandler [or I] will get through this pandemic without his gazillion hours at the skatepark.
To speed up the preparation of not being able to skate, the rain made an appearance and forced our local park to shut down days before the mandatory closures. Fortunately, the puddles had dried up by the time we had arrived. However, unfortunately, the gates were still locked and it did not look like he would be getting in a much needed session.
I explained we would try to come back later in the day in hopes that it would be open, but that was unacceptable for Sandler. Especially, once he noticed several fellow skaters had hopped the fence and were skateboarding like any other day. I tried to convince him that entering property that is closed or that does not belong to you is considered trespassing and illegal. Per usual, he was not going to listen to my unsolicited law abiding gibberish — he was going to skate.
I reluctantly helped him pad up in the parking lot and assessed the safest way to implement our criminal activity. As I watched the fellow delinquents jumping the 13 foot iron barrier, as if they were gazelles, I reminded myself that I am about twenty years older and a lot less agile than most of them. So, I lead Sandler over to a spot where we could access a garbage can for a little leverage and be away from the spotlight if I impaled myself or fell on my face.
Before I knew it, Sandler was up and over in a matter of seconds. It took me a little more time but the adrenaline of doing something so rebellious pushed me to get to the other side. It felt amazing. That is until I looked around and realized I was the only adult, let alone the only mom, who was partaking in the illicit activity.
Now… I certainly do not condone criminal behavior, but I do have to say it was not only worth the risk so Sandler could skate before the inevitable closing of the parks, but it was also an absolute rush to experience being outlaws together as mom and son. We hope you all stay safe, healthy and sane!
